The Wednesday Market:  Greens, Eggplant, and Peppers! Oh My! - Order Now

Good afternoon.

The Wednesday Market is open for orders. Please place your orders by 10 p.m. Monday. Orders are ready for pick up between 3 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Check the website for all of this week’s product listings. Here is the link: https://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

The calendar turned over this week, and it truly seems that Fall is settling in on us. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for this gloomy weather to lift for a while. We deserve a crisp, sunshiny day soon!

If you browse the product listings for this week, you’ll notice an abundance of greens. Whether you fit in the “I-only-want-them-the-way-Grandma-does-it” camp, or take a more modern approach, there’s not doubt that greens are good for us. I had them southern style yesterday at lunch, with lots of tasty shreds of smokey pork floating in the mix. Delicious with a corn bread muffin and pepper sauce! My brother-in-law Aaron, on the other hand, prefers his greens barely cooked and on the garlicky side. You can give it a try, too. Here is a great link on how to cook greens quickly: http://food52.com/blog/9579-how-to-make-sauteed-greens-without-a-recipe

You may also notice that several of our farmers are offering eggplant. Here is a link on ways to cook eggplant: http://www.onegreenplanet.org/vegan-food/different-ways-to-cook-with-eggplant/

And we have peppers! This weblink features a slide show with recipes for bell peppers: http://www.kitchendaily.com/read/16-best-bell-pepper-recipes

Maybe some of these ideas will inspire you to go to the kitchen and cook up something yummy for your family.

Thank you for supporting locally grown agriculture and for choosing to purchase locally. Know your farmer, know your food!

We’ll see you Wednesday.

Thanks,

Beverly

Market News

Welcome to October. The Market opens this morning to fall type weather. Pumpkin Pie reminds us of Fall and White City Produce and Greenhouse has edible pumpkins available. Thanksgiving is fast approaching so be sure to reserve your fresh turkey from West Wind Farms.

With the cooler weather comes greens and we have plenty this week. All kinds of varieties from Erdmann Farm, Flying S Farms, JourneyWorks Community Garden and others.

Besides baby ginger, Rocky Glade Farm introduces a Thai ginger to the Market which is used in Thai cooking but also can be used as a medicinal tea.

As summer winds down, we have several varieties of beans available including wax beans from Rainbow Hill Farm that are perfect for preserving for the winter months.

Wedge Oak Farm has plenty of artisan sausages. Besides the artisan bratwurst, you can also find a hot chicken sausage, a honey pig sausage, a korean ginger sausage and several others flavors.

Linda with Dogwood Valley Greenhouse has this message:

After more rain than I care to think about, hopefully we will see some sunshine later today! I’m excited! It’s time to start cleaning out the fall garden and planting perennials and bulbs for next spring’s bloom! Fall is actually the best time of year to plant perennials, as well as a great time to get a jump on your spring gardening. Fall-planted perennials establish a strong root system over winter, allowing for spectacular spring blooming. It’s definitely time to take advantage of Dogwood Valley Greenhouse‘s “Fall Special” on perennial and herb plants and ferns: Buy 3, get one of equal or lesser value free. Please make a note on your order form of which plant you would like for free (name 3 choices).

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Thanks so much for your support of Stones River Market, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. We’ll see you on Wednesday at Southern Stained Glass at 310 West Main Street from 5:00 to 6: 30 pm!

CLG:  Opening Bell: Kale, Okra, Pork, Purple Hull Peas!

Good afternoon,
Over 500 items available this week! Such an amazing variety of summer favorites with some fall produce coming in too. Best time of the year? Maybe…

It’s also a busy time for our Growers as they tend to the THOUSANDS of plants that will get us all through winter: Onions, garlic, broccoli, cauliflower, chard, kale, etc.

Come early on Friday for the best selection from the EXTRAS table. And save your eggshells throughout the week for the laying hens! :-)

The market is now OPEN for orders. Please check your email about 5 minutes after you place your order to make sure you get an order confirmation. Thank you for being a valuable part of CLG!

Have a great week!
Steve

NEWS AND NOTES

White City Produce & Greenhouses brings White Half Runner Beans to the market this week.

From Dogwood Valley Greenhouse:

It’s time to start cleaning out the fall garden and planting perennials and bulbs for next spring’s bloom! Fall is actually the best time of year to plant perennials, as well as a great time to get a jump on your spring gardening. Fall-planted perennials establish a strong root system over winter, allowing for spectacular spring blooming. It’s definitely time to take advantage of Dogwood Valley Greenhouse’s “Fall Special” on perennial and herb plants and ferns: Buy 3, get one of equal or lesser value at no charge. Please make a note on your order form of which plant you would like for free (name 3 choices).

The variety of foods this time of year is wonderful, with the fall vegetables coming in while the summer vegetables are still in abundant supply. Plan your weekly menu around these great vegetables available on our market from local growers: zucchini, tomatoes, summer squash, spinach, red potatoes, peppers, okra, lettuce, cucumbers, and beans.

But farmers’ markets are not all about vegetables. Please take note of some of the new and returning seasonal items available this week: Live Water Kefir Grains and Square Bale Grass Hay from Triple B Farms; Ground Beef from Paccman Ranch; Scuppernong and Muscadine ciders, jelly, and fruits from White City Produce & Greenhouses.

We also have lots of our regular year-round items: perennial, herb, and fern plants, as well as a good selection of houseplants; local milk, eggs, pork, honey, and chicken cuts; dried herbs and fresh, as well as lots of homemade herbal products too.

(L to R) Fresh Oregano and Concord grapes in two size packages from White City Produce & Greenhouses, Chamomile Tea from Triple B Farms, Red potatoes from Wayne Diller, and Cubed Ham Cutlets from Weaver Farms.
